Report: Apple Has Multiple Teams Working On Wireless Charging For IPhone 8
With rumors noting that the iPhone 8 will have wireless charging, Reuters reports that Apple has a strong focus on the technology. Apple already uses inductive charging for the Apple Watch but this report says Apple has multiple teams working on the technology.
Apple recently joined the group backing Qi. But there are still at least five different groups working on wireless charging technology within Apple, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.
Apple recently joined the Wireless Power Consortium Qi which makes sense if the company is focusing on the charging method.
Apple is an active member of many standards development organizations, as both a leader and contributor. Apple is joining the Wireless Power Consortium to be able to participate and contribute ideas to the open, collaborative development of future wireless charging standards. We look forward to working together with the WPC and its members.
As the Reuters report notes, if Apple brings such a technology to market, they’re already behind. However, this is typical for Apple as seen with NFC and Apple Pay. On the upside, once Apple gets behind a technology and adopts it, the market typically follows suit.
This new report suggesting that Apple has multiple teams working on the project could suggest that Apple is looking to evolve the technology beyond what the currently offers.
