IPod Classic And IPod Shuffle On Their Way Out?

According to an anonymous TUAW source (that’s NOT an analyst), the iPod Classic and the iPod Shuffle are just about nearing their end. I suppose it does make sense for Apple to discontinue these particular iPod models.

For one, they are the lowest-selling models of the iPod line. What’s more, both are more representative of Apple’s history than where it wants to go in the future.

The Classic, which still resembles the original iPod in functionality and design, has been around in one form or another for 10 years. It still employs a platter-based hard drive, something that Apple has since replaced with flash-based memory in most of its gadgets.

The Shuffle never really was a big seller or revolutionary device. It’s just sort of this weird little memory stick that can clip to your clothes and play music. Now, don’t get me wrong, I actually like the Shuffle. Last year I won one in a raffle, and it’s great to take running or working out, but other than that I don’t see many practical uses for it.

Both of these devices face the disadvantage of lacking touch screens (or, in the case of the Shuffle, any screen at all). It’s clear that Apple is heading in the everything-multi-touch direction, and that is simply not possible while these iPods survive.

What’s more, they are the only devices Apple sells that can only do one thing. Every other Apple product, mobile or not, has the capacity to preform a number of tasks. Simply put, the Classic and the Shuffle just don’t fit anymore.

So, if you were on the fence about purchasing one of these iPod models, I’d make a decision sooner rather than later because pretty soon Apple will make the choice for you.

Which iPod model are you most disappointed to see go? If this story pans out, I think music lovers will be upset over the demise of the iPod Classic.

My roommate, a music freak, loves his iPod Classic because it’s the only device he can use to carry around his enormous iTunes library. Though, I prefer the Shuffle. I have absolutely no reason why, I just like it.
