Apple confirms YouTube app not coming with iOS 6

As mentioned earlier, iOS 6 beta 4 was released today. One of the first things noticed in the new version of the beta software is that there is no YouTube app to be found. Nothing. Not even a “replacement” as Apple did with Maps. The YouTube app has been a part of iOS since the original launch in 2007, but Apple has just announced that it will not be included in iOS 6. Here’s the quote given to The Verge:

Our license to include the YouTube app in iOS has ended, customers can use YouTube in the Safari browser and Google is working on a new YouTube app to be on the App Store.

So there you have it, Apple will no longer be making its own YouTube app, and instead Google will be releasing one to the App Store (I would hope in time for the iOS 6 public release). This is further cutting the ties between the Cupertino and Mountain View companies, as with iOS 6 Google Maps will no longer be included either, and Apple will be adding in its own native Maps application as an alternative.

What do you think? Do you wish Apple would renew the license and keep YouTube native? Are you glad to see it go? Can Google make a better standalone app? Let us know in the comments.

Personally I am glad the Youtube app is gone.  The one that came with all of the iOS devices was a joke, plus I never used it so it just took up room.  This way it clears up space for individuals who never used it and allows Google to develop a much better user experience.

That's OK.  I rarely use YouTube on my phone anyways.

I am glad that iOS 6 does not have the YouTube App. Google will hopefully make a better a more up to date App.

Good that youtube app sucked so hard. Foxtube is WAY better.

I'm dissapointed. Glad there will be an app in the App Store but for now I will stick with iOS 6 Beta 3.

@KJ Schumacher I wouldn't do that, iOS betas do expire.

As much as I like the YouTube app, I'm actually happy to see it go. Maybe now Google can focus on fixing and improving the YouTube app instead of leaving it as a less-than-satisfactory app

I use YouTube on iOS all the time!

I'm glad to see it go honestly. That was always the one thing that I didn't like about iOS because I use youtube all the time and the Apple-designed app was always sub-par. I'm extremely glad to hear that google is developing its own because the current youtube app on android 4.0+ is stunning and easy to use. I can only hope that design carries over to iOS like chrome did.

PaytonReece That's a very good point. I have never been the biggest fan of the iOS YouTube app, and I love the Android tablet version (though I have only used it rarely as I only have an Android phone, not tablet, the tablet version is my favorite). Hopefully Google brings that same design over to the iPad, and possibly to the iPhone as well.
