Apple: Record Breaking 10 Million IPhone 6 And 6 Plus Sales

Apple today announced that it has sold 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units. This figure includes the 4 million pre-orders previously announced. The new iPhone models went on sale on Friday, September 19, to long lines around the world.

This year, in particular, it seemed iPhones were both highly desirable and limited in supply with many models soon becoming unavailable.

For comparison, Apple last year announced combined sales of 9 million for the first three days of iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c availability.

As is usually the case, Apple has not opted to break down the sales numbers in order to reveal how many units sold were iPhone 6 and how many were iPhone 6 Plus. The company will most likely provide more information on the performance of the new iPhone models during its quarterly earnings call in October.

While the Cupertino company might not have chosen to divulge individual sales numbers for each model, we can use some other data at our disposal to try and garner that information for ourselves.

Using Fiksu’s iOS 8 adoption tracker, we can see that of all iPhone 6 and 6 Plus devices running iOS 8 (which, of course, they all are as they come with iOS 8 pre-installed), around 85% of them are iPhone 6 and around 15% are the larger iPhone 6 Plus. This suggests a sales breakdown of around 8.5 million iPhone 6 units and 1.5 million iPhone 6 Plus units.

It is possible that the iPhone 6 Plus was either less popular than the iPhone 6, given its dramatic increase in size when compared to previous iPhones, or that supplies were heavily constrained ahead of the launch meaning 6 Plus units were only available in limited quantities. I’d punt for the latter.
