Report shows future iPhones to feature an iris scanner

The latest iPhone rumors show that Apple could be working on integrating iris scanning capabilities onto their next device. Earlier reported by DigiTimes, the new iris scanning feature could debut sometime in 2018, explaining that there is a growing interest on advanced biometric functionality on mobile devices.

According to the source, iris scanning could take the place of Touch ID since it also helps verify the identity of the user. The feature is said to do the same functions such as make payments and unlock an iOS device.

Considering an individual’s iris has a complex and random pattern unique to him, it can work the same way as a fingerprint sensor would on a device.

The fact that there are notable benefits of implementing iris scanning over Touch ID makes it all the more appealing for smartphone manufacturers to include the feature on their devices. Things like faster unlock speeds and removing the need for direct contact to unlock a device have made this feature an appealing option.

Unfortunately, there are also some drawbacks that need to be addressed before iris scanning is fully implemented; such as low lighting and complications brought about by alcohol consumption and eye surgery as these can alter the iris’ pattern.

This isn’t the first time Apple has been reported to consider the possibility of including iris scanning features onto their iPhone devices. Over the years, however, the technology has gained interest from other smartphone manufacturers.

As a matter of fact, Samsung has already been reported to debut iris recognition technology with their Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, which is set for release next month.

While there is some caution about relying on information released by DigiTimes, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reason to believe that new biometric features on a future iPhone is being planned by Apple.

Kuo believes this could either be in the form of iris or facial scanning. It is important to note though that Kuo originally that iris scanning will be available on the 2017 iPhone. But with the feature believed to be released in 2018, it’s likely to be available then.

As of this writing, there are no rumors about the 2018 iPhone yet. But if the rumors about the 2017 iPhone prove true, the 2018 model could carryover things like an edge-to-edge OLED display, no home button, Touch ID sensor and camera integrated onto screen, faster A11 processor, wireless charging, and a fully glass body design. We’ll have to wait and see for these things in the future iPhone models.
