If there’s been one thing missing from the Pebble lineup since its release last year, it’s been a classic, premium design. To nerds, the plastic, brightly colored watch is awesome. To others, it’s just not attractive enough to display on their wrist, especially not if you happen to dress smartly. Thankfully, the company, today at CES, announced a brand new device: Pebble Steel.
Retailing at $249, the Pebble Steel is made from more premium materials. Its face is made of stainless steel, and the display covered by Corning Gorilla Glass. It’s $100 more than its predecessor (which continues to be offered for sale). Feature-wise, it’s pretty much exactly the same as the original model, it just has a much more classic look and feel. Pre-orders are going live today, with general sale on January 28th.
Perhaps a bigger deal is the Pebble appstore. Developers will be able to make apps specifically for the Pebble. Apps like Foursquare, Pandora and ESPN have already been announced as well as an iControl app (a home automation app). Amazingly, Mercedes partnered with Pebble to create an app that allows you to connect directly to your car and see information like distance travelled, tyre pressure etc. It’s all very exciting.
