The Apple TV has gotten a lot of attention recently, even receiving an update yesterday to include 5 new channels: The Weather Channel, Disney, Disney XD, VEVO, and Smithsonian. Well, according a new rumor making its way around the internet, a new Star Wars channel could be coming courtesy of Disney. As I’m sure most of you remember, Disney now owns the rights to the Star Wars franchise, so this wouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see now that Disney obviously is working with Apple to build Apple TV applications. According to sources talking with Jedi News:
A Disney branded app for Star Wars will launch on Apple TV devices, with plans to distribute the final Clone Wars episodes exclusively digitally only through the Apple TV device for a limited period of time. This will happen in this holiday season.
In 2014, plans are in an early stage to use the platform to deliver SW7 production news ‘live’ from the sets, followed with Star Wars Rebels in late 2014 taking us all the way through to SW7 release.
Apple and Disney have had many connections over the years, which was pioneered by late CEO Steve Jobs who was a board member after he sold Pixar to Disney. Disney World also now uses iPads and iPod touch 5th generations in various ways throughout the theme park, but most notably for tickets. CEO of Disney, Bob Iger, currently sits on Apple’s board and recently bought $1 million worth of Apple stock. The Star Wars movies are currently unavailable on iTunes, however, so maybe this is the beginning of a new partnership between the franchise and Apple.
