Following the tragic death of Ma Aliun, it has emerged that the 23-year-old Chinese woman may have been using a third party charger.
China Central Television has released images which show a charred iPhone 4 in its box, alongside an unofficial charger. An expert interviewed by the station stated:
“Knockoff chargers sometimes cut corners. The quality of the capacitor and circuit protector may not be good, and this may lead to the capacitor breaking down and sending 220 volts of electricity directly into the cell phone battery.”
The investigation into Ma’s death is still ongoing, and Apple is continue to assist in the investigation. However it may well be true that a faulty third-party charger is to blame. Ma was allegedly killed when she answered her phone whilst the device was charging last weekend. These incidents are incredibly rare, but remember that there are dangers to using any battery powered device whilst it is charging.
