It has emerged today that settlement talks have begun between Samsung and the European Commission in its antitrust lawsuit.
Samsung is accused of abusing its position in the smart phone market, misusing standard-essential patents to attack Apple and its other competitors. Apple claims that Samsung filed lawsuits over standard-essential patents before it offered licensing deals.
If Samsung is able to settle out of court, they might well avoid potential fines of over $17 billion.
The whole standard-essential patent fiasco is just a little bit ridiculous. I find it incredibly baffling that Samsung would sue Apple over the use of a patent which is essential to the functionality of a mobile device. A settlement of this stage of the case would be a blow to Apple, which is most likely hoping to see Samsung suffer under the weight of law in this case.
