iOS 6 granted FIPS 140-2 certification: now government friendly

Today, the National Institute of Standards and Technology has announced that a cryptographic module in iOS has been granted FIPS 140-2 certification (level 1), which has “huge implications” for government use of iOS.

iOS feature CoreCrypto Kernel Module v3.0, which generates cryptographic keys to protect data in transit and at rest. The module has been granted the lowest level of Federal Information Processing Standard, which should open up much more opportunities for government usage of iOS.

The module was tested on the iPhones 4 and 4S, and also an iPad, all running iOS 6.0, it is yet to be confirmed whether or not this ruling extend to the iPhone 5.
