For those of you that aren’t sure what App.net is, it is almost like an ad-free Twitter. You pay either a monthly or yearly cost for membership, and you use it (from what I understand, I’m not currently a user) like you would Twitter. However it also has other services, such as file storage. Well today, it has introduced a new limited free account that is accessible via invite only. With this new account type, you get the following:

• Free accounts can follow a maximum of 40 users (unlimited for paid accounts)
• Free accounts will have 500 MB of free file (10 GB for paid accounts)
• Free accounts can upload a file with a maximum size of 10 MB (100 MB for paid accounts)

I am interested in trying this out, as it may persuade me to make the plunge on App.net, as I’ve seen no reason to as of yet. I think this is a great way for them to begin to expand the service, and hope to see them possibly open this up to non-invite only as well.
