Despite claiming a huge 53% stake in the US smartphone market last quarter, Apple has dropped to 3rd place in the overall mobile handset market. Thanks to strong sales of its Optimus G handset, LG has pipped Cupertino to the runner-up spot when smartphone and “dumb” phone figures are combined. No prizes for guessing who’s top of the pile:
According to Hong Kong-based Counterpoint Research, mobile phones by LG Electronics recorded a share of 13 percent in December in the United States, beating Apple Inc. with 12 percent. The No. 1 player was retained by Samsung Electronics Co. with 33 percent.
It certainly looks like LG is building a brand in the States, and it’ll be interesting to see whether or not the company’s high-end phones can gain more market share in the smartphone scene.
