BlackBerry PlayBook outselling the new iPad in UK channel sales?

PlayBook

Here’s a phrase I never thought I’d type, ever: the BlackBerry PlayBook is outselling the iPad with Retina in the UK. At least, according to Context, a distribution specialist company which monitors sales through its channels. Having counted up all the numbers sold through its channels over the last two months of 2012, the company noted that the 4th generation iPad was outsold by the Playbook. 160,000 PlayBooks were sold in that period compared to 113,000 Retina-equipped  iPads.

It’s important to note that Context’s channels do not extend to Apple retail stores, where most iPads in the UK are purchased. However, it is interesting to see that when it comes to third party retail, other options are preferred to Apple’s iPad. It’s also important to note that the PlayBook is much cheaper than the iPad. £129 vs. £399. Cheap tablets are clearly gaining ground in the UK. It’s also suspected that third party retailers make more of an effort to push the BlackBerry tablet over the iPad as it has a higher profit margin for them.

Do you know anyone with a PlayBook? I have to confess, I’ve still never met anyone who uses it.

one of the reasons for the Playbook sales is that BB have announced that the new BB10 operating system and features will be able to be downloaded to the Playbook . . since it uses the same architecture as new BB10 phones

I thought RIM stopped making it. A friend at work has one and it is quite neat.

I don't know why the Playbook gets such a bad rap, it's got great hardware and OS that's really slick and finally getting most the top apps.  Plus it's doesn't cost $$$.   As a bonus it will get the BB10 upgrade for free when it's available.

You are bound to move a lot of product when you basically give it away.
