60% of all iOS devices ever sold are running iOS 6

How many devices run iOS 6, you ask? Nearly 300 million, that’s your answer. According to a press release from Apple today regarding the iOS 6.1 update, it says that 300 million devices are running the newest major update to the operating system, being iOS 6.x. On all of these iOS devices, there have been 9 billion photos uploaded to Photo Stream, 450 billion iMessages sent, and an amazing 4 trillion+ notifications received. Let’s do some math though, with the help of EdibleApple:

During Apple’s most recent earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that Apple to date has sold over 500 million iOS devices. If we put those pieces together we see that over half of every iOS device ever sold is now running the most recent version of Apple’s mobile operating system.

That is an insane number, especially considering that the number includes devices that will never see iOS 6, as they simply aren’t compatible. Compare that to the numbers over on Google’s side of the fence, and you see why people tend to choose Apple if they want quick and on-time updates. No waiting for carrier and manufacturers to approve and modify, Apple just pushes the software when it sees fit. This is one major advantage the iPhone will always have over Android devices.

What do you think? Are you on the newest update? Or are you not eligible? Let us know in the comments, or tweet me @TiP_Kyle.

The thing is, iOS updates are only introducing things that have been on Android for many years. Does is matter that you are running iOS 6 when my Android with 2.2 or even 1.6 still does everything that the newest iOS system does?
