A poorly translated rumor from the China Times reports that Apple is planning to launch a 4.8-inch iPhone in the summer alongside the iPhone 5S. This device – supposedly called the “iPhone Math” – doesn’t exactly sound like a product Apple would even consider launching, but let’s entertain the speculation for a brief moment. The site responsible for translating the original article, BrightWire, also reports that – according to supply chain checks – Apple is substantially increasing its component orders in March, pointing to a major launch in early summer. Apart from that, there are no further details on the mythical device.
Personally, I’m not entirely sure where to start in deconstructing the original article. And that’s even if it’s been translated properly. Would Apple ever launch a device called the “iPhone Math”? CultofMac editor Killian Bell speculates it could just be a poor translation issue, and that it is more likely to be called iPhone Plus. Even if that was the case, is Apple really going to release a bigger phone only a year after increasing the display size from 3.5-inches to 4-inches?
My biggest frustration with the speculation is illustrated perfectly in these bullet points from BrightWire:
Apple will announce three new iPhone models in 2013, and two of them, the 4-inch iPhone 5S and 4.8-inch iPhone Math (both featuring 8-mega-pixel cameras), will hit markets before the end of June, China Times reported citing Taiwan-based Commercial Times.
Citing Apple’s suppliers, the report added that the third model, which has not been exposed, will be launched before Christmas. The model will feature a 12-mega-pixel camera.
Are we really going to see three brand new iPhone models in the same year? An iPhone 5S, an “iPhone Plus” and the iPhone 6 all in the same calendar year? Although I’m conscious that I could be throwing the baby out with the bath water, the speculation regarding the larger iPhone makes me want to dismiss the entire article. But, there is one rumors that’s possible in all this: the iPhone 5S. It fits along with Apple’s previous iPhone launches, and it would be great to see the incremental update released a little sooner than 12 months after the previous version. I would be happy to see the launch of an iPhone take center stage at WWDC 2013.
Just in case you weren’t entirely sure about the rumor, the same report also claims Apple will release its long-rumored iTV before the end of 2013. So, in total, that’s three iPhones and an iTV all in one year. If previous rumors are also correct, we’ll see a whole host of brand new iPads too. I’m pretty sure people are forgetting how Apple does business.
What do you think? Would you like to see a 4.8-inch iPhone? Should Apple release 3 brand new iPhones in a year? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
