YouTube, Red Cross, and Flashlight take top spots in App Store in wake of Hurricane Sandy

If you hadn’t heard, here in the US there is currently a hurricane hitting the Northeast region of the country, including the New York area. This storm has caused cities such as New York City even to close down its public transportation to help protect the well-being of both its workers and its citizens. Well due to the storm, YouTube partnered with the Weather Channel to stream live coverage of the storm 24/7. Also, the Red Cross has an application in the App Store that allows you to stay up-to-date with your area. These two apps, plus the Flashlight app (for obvious reasons) have all 3 propelled to the top of the App Store’s “Free” chart.

It’s unsurprising to see these applications jump to the top as this storm hits the US. The affected areas are heavily populated, so with all of them going to download these apps there was no question the top charts would be impacted. I hope everyone in the areas hit by Hurricane Sandy are staying safe. Being from Florida, I know how hurricanes can be.

Have you been hit by the hurricane? Are you one of the many who downloaded these apps? If so, have the helped? Let us know in the comments.
