There’s a reason the Smart Cover is only for the iPad

When the Smart Cover was debuted along with the iPad 2, I fell in love. The Apple-branded, multifunctional magnetic cover for the second gen Apple tablet. I was so infatuated with the cover, in fact, that I started wishing Apple would make an iPhone counterpart. Since then, though, me and the Smart Cover have had our ups and downs. Other iPad cases have come into the equation, and while I still like the Apple accessory I’m certainly not as taken with it as I once was.

Now, as far as an iPhone Smart Cover is concerned, I haven’t thought about one for a very long time. Today the images were once again pulled to the forefront of my consciousness by a new case from USB Fever, and I have to say I do not like what I see. I’m sure this case isn’t unique, but it’s the first one I’ve seen. Obviously this case doesn’t have the sleep/wake feature that real Smart Covers do, but it’s still magnetic. It sticks to itself to form a stand for the device and it sticks to the back of the case to get the flap out of the way when you’re using your phone. What’s more, unlike the original Smart Cover, the “Case with Multi-functional Smart Cover for iPhone 4s / iPhone 4″ has a backplate to attach the flap to the device.

I’m not even going to touch on that name because the case speaks for itself. It’s got a weird, hexagonal design, looses the best aspect of the original Smart Cover (the sleep/wake), and when it’s closed it makes the phone look like a Fisher Price cell phone toy. To be fair, I’ve never actually used this case, but there’s just something about the whole idea that rubs me the wrong way. Also, the accessory video (below) has a lot of shots of people sticking their phone to white boards and stuff. Why would anyone want to do this? I’ve never been writing on a white board and thought “Man, this would be so much easier if only I could stick my iPhone right up next to this incorrectly conjugated Spanish verb!”

What do you guys think? Are you a fan of this mini Smart Cover imitation, or do you share my reservations? If Apple made a Smart Cover for the iPhone, would you use it? Let me know in the comments section below or hit me up on twitter!

i own that case and i’m happy with the magnetic function. It’s very useful for me to use in the kitchen. Just stick it to the fridge door and I can take calls, read messages, read a recipe easily. Sad to say that the quality of the product us horrible because it started peeling off within 2 months.
