Are Apple Holding Carriers Back?

Research company Ericsson have established that Apple’s iPhone, whilst only holding 20% of the world’s smartphone customer base, accounts for 45% of all 3G mobile traffic.

The report showed that Apple topped the data usage charts with a huge majority, Android holds around 15% of users, and takes up 30% of our bandwidth. The survey was conducted across Europe, America and Asia, and it shows that the average data usage per month is around 350Mb. It’s pretty clear that because the iPhone is a premium phone, the contract customers are signing up to often encompass a larger data allowance because of that premium, so the results to reflect the expected outcome. However, whilst the news will probably prove handy in a pub quiz one day, it raises a more interesting question…

As many disgruntled iPhone users know, the iPhone only operates on 3G, and its quickly being surpassed as phones and networks are upgraded to 4G (LTE). This is particularly evident in the U.S. Because the iPhone is using so much of the bandwidth that carriers have to offer, they have to keep investing in the older 3G networks to keep them running.

As summarised by Donald Masters from World News Resource: Carriers investing large amounts of money in its older 3G networks means that less time and money can be spent on developing 4G networks, “stunting the growth of an essential progression”. What’s more, the problem will only worsen when Apple releases its next iPhone, with 4G capability almost a certainty, the prices of Apple’s earlier 3G devices will plummet, pushing up the demand for 3G bandwidth once more…

True yes but as we should all know iPhone I'm sure should be 4G in the next generation 5.  The iPad is 4G now so one can only assume that the next generation iPhone will be 4G also.  Could they be holding back perhaps but its their company they can say who gets it.

In America, some iPhones are '4G'. This is AT&T's HSPA+ network.

KraKsX If you consider THAT 4G then I guess the speed I get, 42mbps, must be 6G by now lol.

There is not one iPhone that is 4G only iPad is.  iPhone 5 should be 4G.

True. I think Apple is hurting carriers because a lot of people have iPhones and its using all the 3G coverage. Their carriers are forced to put a cap on the 4G when the new iPhone 5 comes out and not offer unlimited data. This will also expose how good 4G coverage is on networks.

Dwinbush2 They could still offer unlimited data they just felt like making more money off of their loyal customers. If they are having issues with bandwidth there are other solutions then charging a arm and a leg for data and it doesn't even help the carriers network, they could slow down heavy users during peak times and that would help every one the carriers network and the consumers pocket.

Thats what TMO does. You get unlimited data, but you pay for a higher throttling limit. So for 35 bucks you get 5gb use of 4G web and mobile hotspot and then still get unlimited data (without any additional cost) afterwards at 2G speeds.
