High-res images found in iBooks 2 hint at iPad 3 with Retina display
Apple’s iBooks 2 was unveiled today, and developers are already uncovering some interesting media that are included in it. More specifically, high resolution images – or should I say Retina display-quality images – are present in the application’s files. The fact that there’s no iPad currently available that offers a Retina display is leading people to believe that this is an indication that the iPad 3 will have a higher resolution Retina display!
The images in question are marked ”@2x,” and weigh in at 2048×1536 pixels and display at 260 pixels per inch. For those unfamiliar, that’s approximately double what the iPad 2 can natively display.
Now, don’t get your hopes up too high. Similar, higher resolution images have appeared in earlier versions of iBooks dating back to 2010. This sparked speculation that the iPad 2 would have a Retina display and, of course, that isn’t the case. So the question now is whether this renewed round or Retina rumors (please excuse that alliteration) is simply a repeat of rumors that won’t pan out, or if this means we’ll finally see a Retina-caliber display on Apple’s tablet.
