iPhone 5 event coverage – scratch that: iPhone 4S!
This page won’t auto-update (unless some magical web pixies have secretly been doing stuff on our site) so be sure to hit that refresh button. (Every couple of minutes should ensure you get the latest info.)Â
Thanks for sticking with us. We’ve had some pretty big hiccups with our servers along the way. More reaction posts to follow. Stay tuned.
2:39pm - Last big announcement, and we’re done: 4S will be available on Sprint! No iPhone 5.
2:38pm – iPhone 4S release date: October 14th, pre-orders on October 7th. US, Canada, Australia, UK, France, Germany and Japan.
2:37pm – iPhone 4 will be available f0r $99, 3GS still available, for free.
2:36pm -“So that’s the iPhone 4S. Black and white, 16GB for $199, 32GB for $299, and 64GB for $399. 64GB is the first time in an iPhone.â€
2:27pm – It’s essentially an iOS butler.
2:25pm - Still talking about Siri… “Compose and dictate email right to Siri. Set timers. Look up contacts, create notes, search the web, search Wikipedia.â€
2:24pm – Siri is a big deal. You can do almost anything just by using your voice. Search Wikipedia or Wolfram Alpha for definitions, or topics.
2:23pm – “This is blow-away. I just checked my calendar, scheduled a meeting, and got it all read back by Siri.†It’s like Knight Rider’s phone..
2:20pm - “With Siri, you can just ask Siri to read your messages to you.â€
2:16pm - Siri, voice control to the extreme, sounds great. You can ask it “what’s the weather like today?†and it’ll tell you.
2:14pm - One more thing… Voice (Siri)! “For decades technologists have teased us with this dream that we can talk to our technology. But it’s never come true! It’s such a let-down! What we really want to do is just talk to our device!â€
2:10pm - 1080p video recording, and much faster shutter speed than its competitors.
2:07pm - Apparently has a fantastic lens. Can let in a lot of light.
2:06pm – “CMOS backside illuminated sensor — gets 73% more light than the iPhone 4 sensor, and 1/3rd faster. On top of that, we place a high-end IR filter for greater accuracy and uniformity.â€
2:05pm - New camera, 8mp!
2:04pm - It’s a worldphone. (Both GSM and CDMA)
2:02pm - Download speeds up to 14.4mbps
2:00pm – Better battery life, even with the enhanced processor. Improved antenna. “Our engineering team has worked really hard to advance the state of the art that’s never been done in a phone before. It can now intelligently switch between two antennas between send and receive to make even better call quality.â€
1:57pm – Usual Apple arrogance. “It’s a breakthrough device.” No, it isn’t. It’s an iPhone 4 with a faster chip.
1:56pm - Same 3.5″ Retina display. New A5 processor. “Dual-core CPU, 2x as fast at CPU tasks. Also dual-core graphics. Up to 7x faster in the previous iPhone. One area you really see it scream is in games.â€
1:55pm – New iPhone!! Finally. And (drum roll please) – it’s the iPhone 4S!

12:41pm – As I’ve been expecting, apparently iPhone 4S is due for launch on October 14th. (Just a rumor right now.) One of my sources told me the same thing yesterday, he said it was an “educated guess”. (Didn’t want to get in to trouble.)
12:38pm - Just over 20 minutes to go. Who’s excited?
