4G iPhone coming soon? LTE experts needed at Apple
A new job posting has appeared on Apple’s job listings page. It specifically calls for someone who will develop the radio/modem within the iOS devices. Included in the ‘specific duties’ section is this:
“Specific Duties
– Implementation, Integration, customization, enhancement and maintenance of L1-3 Protocols for one or more of the following air interface: GSM/UMTS, CDMA (1x/EVDO), LTE etc.”
By just mentioning LTE as an area that needs work, it’s clear that Cupertino has something up its sleeve for future products. Now, since the job has only been posted recently, I doubt that the technology will be ready by the time iPhone 5 comes out in June, but what about the 2012 model? Something else to consider is that currently, in the States at least, only Verizon has started upgrading to LTE, and that’s been a fairly recent thing. So, it stands to reason that it’s going to take a few years before Big Red’s 4G network is widely available.
Carriers’ network technology is something which is always evolving, and since it appears that LTE will ultimately be the future of mobile internet, it makes sense that Apple is making plans to implement it in to what is undoubtedly the most popular smartphone ever made.
