New gestures coming for iPhone 4G?
You’ve got to love geeks. I mean that in the most sincere way possible. (Seriously, my hubby’s one, and I’ve got more than a little geek streak in me, myself.)
What I’m talking about this time though has to do with some clever technological sleuthing. For what? Ideas on what the next iPhone might come with, of course! Here’s the gist:
Looks like the squad over at 9to5Mac found some interesting stuff when it dove into the latest iPhone SDK. (SDK is short for software developers kit. It’s the Apple supplied package people use to create iPhone apps.) In the iPhone 3.2 Beta 4 SDK, there’s a folder called “gestures” that has some intriguing file names: 3Tap.plist and LongPress.plist.
Those names seemingly indicate some new input commands — stuff that isn’t in the current iPhone software.
What could three taps call up? What about long press? No one’s 100 percent sure yet, though there are some guesses about the long press bringing up a context menu. But whether these specific tidbits rock your world or not could be beside the point: The fact Apple’s giving access to these capabilities to developers is nothing to sneeze at. What cool, crazy ways will future apps make use of new gestures? And how could that translate to the iPad?
At the very least, let’s take it as a good thing when we see signs that Apple’s still innovating new stuff for the iPhone OS. This, I think (I hope), is just the tip of the iceberg. A sexy, refreshed form factor would also have a heaping lot of awesome sauce all over it too, no?
Stay tuned, boys and girls. As we get closer to an iPhone announcement, the rumor mill will start cranking even faster.
