An iPhone app for those who get choked up — literally

I heard the story awhile back about a guy who, when shot by a gun, literally dodged a bullet, thanks to the deflection of a smartphone in his shirt pocket. I don’t know if it’s true, but I’ve since seen this plot device used in countless movies.

Maybe a little less melodramatic, but no less lifesaving, is an iPhone app called “I am choking.” (Link opens iTunes.)

If you or anyone you know has ever seen a lovely dinner take a tragic turn, then you’ll appreciate the brilliant simplicity of this app: If food gets stuck, blocking your windpipe and preventing you from speaking, help is just a screen tap away. The app flashes the words, “Help, I am choking,” along with a loud alarm, and then displays the basics of the Heimlich maneuver. “I am choking” is simple, direct and super easy to use, which is really key during an emergency.

In truth, this is one of those apps I probably wouldn’t think to load onto my phone ahead of time, but maybe I should. In fact, I have a terrible habit of scarfing down food — since I am usually in a colossal hurry — so it’s not hard to imagine a scenario going horribly, horribly wrong.

There’s only one flaw I keep tripping over: Given the situation, I don’t know how level-headed I’d be if I were choking. Would I have the wits about me to reach for my iPhone when my life is flashing before my eyes?

Well it would certainly be awful to find out firsthand that I do, but then not have it when I needed it most. And for the bargain-basement price of absolutely nada/zero/zip/free, there is absolutely nothing to lose — except maybe a small bit of space on my device — but everything to gain.

For a look at the app in action, here’s a vid created by iPhoneSavior.com.
