Apple Maps, showing their current photographic feature, Flyover
Rumors about what Apple was doing with specially modified vans were floating about weeks ago. Now, we know what Apple was doing with those vehicles: preparing additions to their mapping service.
With a new support document, Apple outlines that they are driving around vehicles to improve Apple Maps. Those vehicles are also taking photographs as they drive. No doubt, this is to create ground-level imagery.
Whether we’ll see Apple’s approach to Street View this year or not is yet to be seen. However, Apple did specify that they will blur faces and license plates prior to publishing photographs.
These vehicles are operating in multiple countries. Apple has even outlined where these vehicles will be operating over the next couple of weeks. They can be seen in Ireland, England, and in 13 US states.
