Bent IPhones Will Undergo Visual Inspections For Replacement

By now you’ve likely seen YouTuber Unbox Therapy’s video in which he attempted to bend the new iPhone 6 Plus with his bare hands. As you can see from the image above, the iPhone underwent some significant damage.

Since the video went live earlier this week, it has gone viral and has been viewed nearly 25 million times. With it, the term “bendgate” was born. The video was made after a few iPhone 6 users looked to social media to post pictures of their bent iPhone 6 Pluses.

Tech blog The Next Web has now reached out to Apple Support about the issue. According to the representative they chatted with, iPhone 6 Plus users who experience bending will need to have their phone inspected by an Apple Genius.

The Genius will then determine whether or not the bent phone is covered under warranty. The test is referred to as the Visual Mechanical Inspection test, but the Support representative said they are not aware what exactly the test is looking for. The representative also noted that Apple is “looking into this with an insane amount of detail.”

It appears that Apple is willing to replace iPhones that they believe bent under normal use. Obviously, bending your iPhone on purpose (in the same way Unbox Therapy has) will not get you a replacement iPhone.
