Apple Confirms YouTube App Not Coming With IOS 6

As mentioned earlier, iOS 6 beta 4 was released today. One of the first things noticed in the new version of the beta software is that there is no YouTube app to be found. Nothing. Not even a “replacement” as Apple did with Maps.

The YouTube app has been a part of iOS since the original launch in 2007, but Apple has just announced that it will not be included in iOS 6. Here’s the quote given to The Verge:

Our license to include the YouTube app in iOS has ended, customers can use YouTube in the Safari browser and Google is working on a new YouTube app to be on the App Store.

So there you have it, Apple will no longer be making its own YouTube app, and instead Google will be releasing one to the App Store (I would hope in time for the iOS 6 public release).

This is further cutting the ties between the Cupertino and Mountain View companies, as with iOS 6 Google Maps will no longer be included either, and Apple will be adding in its own native Maps application as an alternative.

What do you think? Do you wish Apple would renew the license and keep YouTube native? Are you glad to see it go? Can Google make a better standalone app? Let us know in the comments.
