Redsn0w JB Tool Can Also Jailbreak IOS 4.2 GM
Yesterday Apple released the iOS 4.2 GM for registered developers to get their hands dirty with. Not a minute later and we already get word that this new update is completely jailbreakable with the new Redsn0w jailbreak tool which was released on Sunday for both Mac and Windows.
Now don’t go jumping up and down just yet. Unless you are a jailbreak app developer, I wouldn’t suggest jailbreaking iOS 4.2 at the moment. Most jailbreak apps – including Cydia – haven’t been updated to work properly with the new 4.2 update just yet.
Not to mention that for anyone like me that is using their iPhone on T-Mobile USA or any other unsupported carrier updating would not be a smart move. [Corrected: You don’t have to be a developer to install iOS 4.2 GM, as originally stated.]
Today Apple released to developers the GM seed for 4.2. Tinkerers will find that yesterday’s redsn0w jailbreaks today’s 4.2 GM seed, simply by pointing redsn0w at the 4.1 IPSW (rather than the 4.2 one). Right now it mostly only makes sense for JB app developers to do that because many apps (including Cydia itself) need to be updated for 4.2. However, if all you want to do is enable afc2 (to use iFunBox or other file browsers), or to tweak settings like Battery % and Homescreen wallpapers, then go for it (if you have valid paid access to the GM seed). Be sure to uncheck the Cydia box, though! Ultrasn0w unlockers should stay very far away from this!!
But at least we know we have something to look forward to. How long do you guys think it will take till us regular folk get our hands on some 4.2 goodness? I really hoping it will be before November 7. And will you be jailbreaking right away. If so let us know how the process went, if not then we will be sure to put up an easy step-by-step for those of you weary of the process.
