Apple’s Eddy Cue sat down with Ben Silverman during the Code Media conference to talk about Apple’s upcoming original content shows.
Cue began by talking about their original reality show, Planet of the Apps. The show’s first trailer premiered today as well.
The interview shed some light on the original idea of the show. Silverman, along with Will.i.am, created the basic concept of the show and pitched it to major networks. After the failed attempts, Will.i.am mentioned the idea to Apple and that’s how the relationship started. Silverman explains:
“My partners and I were working on the show and taking the show out to pitch it. We took it out to pitch it to the traditional players and platforms and were really focused on broadcast. During the process, we had one day of meetings and all of the people we pitched to wanted the show.
Will said, ‘I have to go have a meeting with Jimmy Iovine and Eddy Cue, are you guys cool if i bring up the idea?’
Will laid out the concept and they immediately connected on it.”
Apple has also took the wraps off the second peek into Carpool Karaoke today as well. More specifically, this clip shows off the concept of having multiple hosts on the show, as apposed to just James Corden. The description for the clip reads:
Based on the segment that has become a global, viral video sensation on The Late Late Show with James Corden, the new CARPOOL KARAOKE series features 16 celebrity pairings riding along in a car together as they sing tunes from their personal playlists and surprise fans who don’t expect to see big stars belting out tunes one lane over.
Aside from a “Spring” release date, we don’t know when the show will actually launch. But it’s interesting that it’s behind a paywall for Apple Music considering Apple just launched its own TV app. It would make more sense for Apple to create a channel within the TV app for shows such as Planet of the Apps and Carpool Karaoke.
