Speck CandyShell AMPED for iPhone 5/5s [Review]

Speck CandyShell AMPED

Speck, one of the leading case makers for mobile phones, recently released their newest case, the CandyShell AMPED case.  It’s supposed to double the volume of your iPhone 5/5s speakers while giving your phone added protection against drops and falls with its two protective layers.

The AMPED case doesn’t require any extra battery power; it instead relies on a horn-shaped cut-out carved into the inside of the case. The case traps the sound and redirects it out of the side of the case, creating essentially a new set of speakers.

I’ve been testing the AMPED case for about a week now and I absolutely love it. It’s a tad bit thicker than your standard CandyShell case, but it’s not too bulky and is fairly protective. Overall, the rounded edges make it feel really nice in hand. The price-point is a little high though coming in at $44.95 in the US, but seeing as you won’t need an external speaker, I guess you can say that the price is fairly reasonable.

As far as sound goes, it is really good at amplifying notifications, as well as videos and music. You can definitely hear the difference and the sound is really clear and crisp. The sound amplification really comes in handy if you’re sharing a YouTube video with a friend, for example.

At the end of the day, the AMPED case works pretty well and is a sturdy case that should last you for a while. Another thing to note is that the covered buttons are extremely easy to press, unlike many other cases and has raised bezels that would protect your phone if you drop it face first.

Do you guys like Speck products? If you do, you will surely love this case. Be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments section down below and give me a shout on Twitter as well – @malloriedeaton.

This looks interesting. How’s access to the headphone jack?

    • Mallorie Deaton

Access to the headphone jack is better than most cases. If you have ever had a CandyShell before, it is the exact same (open port). Most headphones will have no issues fitting. Some larger auxiliary cords may have problems fitting, though.

I was thinking more along the lines of using a credit card reader. I’m going to assume that’ll be a problem. That’s the main reason I returned the OtterBox Defender.
