I can’t say I ever expected this. According to Financial Times via 9to5Mac, Apple may be in late-stage talks to buy Beats Electronics. Yes, the same company that worked with HTC and makes the popular Beats by Dre headphone lineup. As per the report, the figure that is being used is around $3.2 billion. That’s a lot, especially for Apple. Apple hasn’t ever bought a company for that much money, ever. Even when it bought NeXT, it didn’t pass half a billion. According to Bloomberg, the deal could be announced as soon as next week:
Apple is closing in on its largest ever acquisition with the planned $3.2bn purchase of Beats Electronics, the headphone maker and music streaming operator founded by music producer Jimmy Iovine and the hip-hop star Dr Dre. The deal could be announced as early as next week, people familiar with the negotiations said, but they cautioned that some details had yet to be agreed and talks could still fall apart.
Beats Electronics is a company I feel goes hand in hand with Apple, seeing as they are nice and expensive. This would provide Apple with a plethora of audio related technologies, and with Apple possibly set to launch an on-demand, Spotify-esque music streaming service, this could help market such a thing. Of course, Beats currently has such a thing, so that possibly could simply be adopted as Apple’s own. With all the good reviews out regarding Beats Music, I feel myself and many others would be perfectly fine with that happening.
Don’t be surprised if next week you see a press release from both companies announcing the acquisition, or even sooner that the news has possibly leaked. Keep in mind that while many are saying sources are confirming, this still isn’t set in stone. But seeing as the report has it being in “late-stages” of the purchase, it is very possible this is going to happen.
What do you think? Are you excited about this chance? Hope Apple pulls the trigger? Let us know in the comments, or tweet me @TiP_Kyle.
