Fourth Generation Apple TV shows up in iOS 7 coding

References to a fourth generation Apple TV  device have been found in iOS 7’s software build.

Deep within the coding, a reference to AppleTV4,1 has been found, alongside reference to Apple’s 2nd generation model (2010), the 3rd generation device from March 2012, and Apple’s current TV. This is pretty concrete confirmation that Apple is working on a next-generation Apple TV, and likely has been for some time. This reference has been present since iOS 7 was released in September, however it was only recently found by 9to5 Mac, who were tipped off by developer Hamza Sood.

The move from 3,2 to 4,1 is also a clear sign that, unlike the last Apple TV upgrade, the next model will be a serious upgrade, likely with new components, and possibly a new form factor to match.

Rumors of a dedicated Apple television set still persist despite new evidence that Apple is building a new Apple TV.

Maybe the rumors of the dedicated Apple TV set will be this new Apple TV. Maybe they’ll call the full TV set “Apple TV” just like the set top boxes.
