Filmmaker Ken Burns launches interactive iPad app

Award winning documentarian and filmmaker Ken Burns has launched an interactive American history app exclusively for iPad.

The app features a timeline dating back to 1776 and includes a number of themes with specific information and videos for each time period and subject. Ken Burns for iPad has a fluid user interface, panning from subject to subject and making used of slow-zooming effects, something Ken Burns fans will be accustomed to.

Ken Burns for iPad is available now for free on the App Store with access to the Innovation playlist. A $9.99 in-app purchase grants you full access to five additional playlists including over three hours of video and exclusive content from Ken.

Essentially, the app provides access to collage of curated footage from Ken’s films illustrating recurring themes in American history: Race, War, Art, Hard Times, Innovation and Politics.

From the release notes:

This app is not a collection of Ken’s filmography—it’s an entirely new way of looking at American history, only available on iPad.
