BlackBerry’s BBM for iOS has just been updated with a new Find Friends feature that removes the need to share PINs.
On first opening the app after updating, you will be presented with the option to find friends and this will also be permanently available from the Invite tab.
As you can see in the screenshot above, BBM will automatically detect who in your iPhone contacts list uses BBM and will allow you to quickly send them an invite to join your contacts list in the app. This is similar to how other popular messaging apps work, such as Viber or WhatsApp, that can automatically tell you who from your iOS Contacts is already using the service.
If your friends are not already using BBM, you will still be able to invite them to join via SMS or email.
I think it was about time BBM dropped the PIN and caught up with the rest of the players in the messaging app market. To me, the BBM PIN always seemed like an unnecessary additional step in order to add contacts and I’m happy to see it eradicated.

The update is free and can be downloaded now (although it is yet to it the UK store and is likely propagating through App Stores worldwide). If you don’t already have BBM, you can download from the App Store for free.
