WhatsApp brings new iOS 7 look in latest update

WhatsApp iOS 7

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps for iOS devices, and has constantly been in the top of the Paid apps section in the iOS App Store, and most recently, as a freemium app, has become one of the most popular free apps on the top lists. However, I’ve never been a big fan of the app mainly because I’ve always felt like the design was out of date, and frankly horrible. It never seemed like much time was spent on how the app looked, and that was always a game changer for me. However, today the company behind WhatsApp has finally pushed out its latest update, and to my delight, it brings along a whole new look to go with iOS 7.

While a new look is long overdue, it’s great that it is actually happening. My only complaint after looking at the screenshots is that it looks too generic for me. There seems to be nothing new in this app that I haven’t seen before. The app ads the typical circular profile pictures for users, blue accents, and plain white background. While it looks nice, and certainly fits in with the iOS 7 look, I wish WhatsApp would have been a little more inventive with the look of the app, and added something new to make it stand out.

Unfortunately I have not been able to test out the new look yet (the App Store says it includes a new iOS 7 look, but still has the old design), so I am basing all of my opinions off of the screenshots that have been released so far. I also hope that a new app icon comes with this update, as the old icon is very iOS 6-like, and wouldn’t fit in with the rest of the design. If you want to check if the update is available for your device, head on over to the iOS App Store and check it out. If your update is available, be sure to drop your thoughts in the comments section below, or tweet me at @TiP_Griffin.
