A rumor has surfaced today suggesting that Chinese company Taig sponsored “evad3rs” as much as $1 million to use its third-party app store in the brand new iOS 7 jailbreak.
Shortly after EvasiOn7 was announced, Chinese jailbreakers began to report that Cydia, the standard jailbreak appstore had been replaced by Taig’s third party offering. Testing has confirmed that switching your default language to Chinese will give you a jailbreak with Taig’s store installed, whilst any other will receive Cydia as normal.
Rumors are suggesting that Taig may have paid up to $1 million for the privilege. Taig’s own store is notorious for pirated apps. In an open letter on their website, evad3rs stated:
Yes, we have benefitted financially from our work, just as many others in the jailbreak community have, including tweak developers, repo owners, etc. Any jailbreak from us will always be free to the users but we believe we have a right to be compensated in an ethical way, just as any other developer.
The letter also suggests that Taig assured evad3rs that their app store would not tolerate software piracy, and that the issues were being addressed.
