Apple shuts down iPhone stock tracer, Apple-tracker.com

A few days ago we informed you of a site launched to help you keep track of which U.S. stores had stock of iPhones and iPads. Apple-tracker.com was originally launched to help avoid being disappointed by levels of stock of the iPhone 5s a few weeks ago, and was updated this week to include iPad Air tracking. You’d simply select the device you wanted to buy and the page would search through all local stores automatically giving you the ability to see which stores had what stock.

Sadly, the developer – known only as Mordy – received a DMCA takedown notice from Apple. Apparently his site  “scrapes and collects data from apple.com in violation of the apple.com Internet Service Terms of Use.” To avoid any further action, the site was taken down stating “I’m not really interested in picking a fight with apple so… I guess it time to just say good bye.”

While it may collect data in “violation” of Apple’s terms, it’s sad to see the company enforcing that a site – which essentially helped customers to buy its products more conveniently – be shut down. Doesn’t make a great deal of sense to me, but then again, this is Apple. It often does things that don’t make sense.
