Paper by 53 now lets you order custom Moleskine books

One of my favorite creativity apps just got a whole lot more enticing. Paper by 53 is the perfect example of art being optimized for the digital age. The popular program lets you use a selection of different tools from pens and pencils to water color “paints” on screen, creating individual virtual books for different types of work. From today, the app now also lets you order hard copies of your books. Working in conjunction with Moleskine, users can pay $40 to get a hand-assembled, 15-page foldout book.

What’s New in Version 1.4.0

Bring your ideas to life with a beautiful, custom-crafted Book, created right from within Paper. FiftyThree and Moleskine, makers of the legendary notebook, bring you a new format designed uniquely for Paper: a 15-page foldout of your sketches on FSC-certified sustainable paper, with a custom or classic black cover. Book is the simplest and most beautiful way to share your ideas with others.

For those of you concerned about the trees, the matte paper used is taken from sustainable sources.

We believe we’ve built the easiest print-on-demand publishing with the same dedication to simplicity we put in Paper. Book is a new format, created by Moleskine exclusively for Paper, with pages designed to match the iPad’s 4:3 aspect ratio. There is no need to resize pages, and your journal’s cover art becomes the cover of the book. Place an order and you’re just a couple of weeks away from having a custom-printed Book in your hands.

The app is available to download now for free. It is a freemium app, but freemium done right. Initial download gives you access to some basic and necessary features and tools. The in-app store gives you options to pay for additional tools. It’s particularly handy if you have no interest in one implement. If you have it already, simply check the App Store for updates.
