This only seem inevitable following Otterbox’s acquisition of case maker rival LifeProof. Otterbox has just announced a waterproof variant of its cases, dubbed the Preserver Series. It is available for now for iPhone 5, and coming soon to iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, and Samsung’s Galaxy S4. Now, immediately I noticed something: it looks like there is a hole in the plastic over the iPhone 5s’s Touch ID enabled home button. There’s an issue with that though, as it wouldn’t therefore be really waterproof as Otterbox is claiming…unless there is some sort of trick up its sleeve. Here is the full press release:
Cork, Ireland. – Today’s top smartphones can do just about everything, and with the newest case from OtterBox, they can go just about everywhere. The OtterBox Preserver Series allows smartphone users to take on life’s daily adventures and extraordinary pursuits without thinking about the safety of their devices. This slim-line case provides the following protection**:

“About 70 per cent of the Earth’s surface is covered in water, and technology is almost as pervasive,” said OtterBox CEO Brian Thomas. “We take our smartphones with us everywhere, and OtterBox is dedicated to making these activities as worry-free as possible. The Preserver Series is dependable, seriously waterproof protection that you can trust.”
The two-piece case snaps together for easy installation. It boasts a solid plastic frame lined with device-cradling foam and over moulded bumpers to absorb and deflect shock away from the device inside. The built-in screen protector guards the vibrant display from scratches without inhibiting touch sensitivity.
Protection doesn’t come at the cost of functionality with this precision-engineered case. All features are fully accessible and audio quality uncompromised. The Preserver Series includes an adjustable lanyard for convenient, confident carrying.
The Preserver Series is seriously waterproof protection for every moment in life. To learn more, visit www.otterbox.com.
You can get more information on these cases here: Otterbox. I am definitely looking at getting one of these, as I miss being able to use my LifeProof but also want to use Touch ID on my iPhone 5s, so we will see what becomes of this (as to how exactly it works, and how reliably).
