Update to Google Hangouts for iOS allows free calls to US and Canada

Google Hangouts has been updated tonight, and includes a pretty big new feature. The app allows users to call US and Canada numbers from the iOS app completely free. Users can also make international calls, but there will be a fee for those calls. For users with a Google Voice account, they can call, as well as receive calls through the app now as well. Below is the changelog from the App Store.

What’s New in Version 1.3.0

– See which of your friends is using Hangouts, and who can be reached right now

– Call phone numbers from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch (free to the US and Canada)

– Make and receive calls using your Google Voice number

– Send and receive animated GIFs that play inline

– Hangouts will temporarily turn down your music (instead of stopping it) when you receive an incoming message

For users of the Hangouts app, this is a pretty big update as it now allows outgoing calls. To get the app, or to update it, head on over to the App Store.

Can you call for free using Hangouts on Android?  Ive never even opened the app up.  Ive used Viber for international calls and texts, from Canada to Australia.  Does anyone really need free domestic calls now?  PRetty much every major carrier includes free domestic calls and texts, event hough most customers dont want or need it.  The only smartphone plan I know of is a (hidden) Tmobile/Walmart plan that offered 1oo minutes, unlimited text, and 5gb of high speed data for only $30
