Optical zoom coming to the iPhone camera?

Apple-iPhone-camera-optical-zoom-patent-drawing-001

Rumors, rumors, rumors. Don’t you just love them? Well if you love cameras, you will love this. According to some new patents filed, Apple may have found a way to put an optical lens into the iPhone. It is sort of a hybrid camera of sorts, allowing it to not disrupt the thinness that Apple strives for in its devices. According to the patent:

The cube splits the incident light into first, second, and third color components that emerge from the cube through a first face, a second face, and a third face of the cube, respectively.

First, second, and third image sensors are provided, each being positioned to receive a respective one of the color components that emerge from the first, second, and third faces of the cube. Other embodiments are also described and claimed.

This would definitely become a trend setter – once other companies were able to develop their own methods, that is. iPhoneography has become big, even so much that lenses have been released, and personally it has replaced my point and shoot. I’m definitely hoping this is real.

What do you think? Are you interested in what will become of this? Let us know in the comments, or tweet me @TiP_Kyle.
