Apple’s “App of the week” really is a fantastic feature. It allows the promotion of new, exciting and exceptional apps on the App Store, not only does this raise the profile of the app in question and its developers, its also means we get some awesome apps for free!
Infinity Blade is one of the most successful games on the App Store, and back in its hay day it offered stunning graphics, nice game mechanics and even a coherent story line. It was an instant hit on the App Store, and has led to the release of of a sequel, “Infinity Blade 2″. Like all apps however, it eventually fell out of fashion, and just a few days ago, priced at 99 cents, it was unranked in the app store.
Now however, according to charts from AppData, Infinity Blade’s popularity has rocketed, and it now sits in the top 5 of the App Store’s “free app” rankings.
Known as the “hockey-stick effect”, the upwards trends towards the end of the chart shows how Infinity Blade’s popularity has changed over the past week. It truly is astonishing to see just how much impact “App of the Week” has had on Epic’s title, and the benefits don’t stop there.
Not as drastic as the success of Infinity Blade, but still equally impressive, is the rise of its sequel, Infinity Blade 2, which has climbed dramatically thanks to the publicity offered to its predecessor.
Also notable, is the change in rankings in the “Top Grossing” category. Despite the fact that Infinity Blade has been free all week, its gross earnings has increased dramatically, which shows the popularity of “freemium” apps and in-purchases.
I think it’s safe to say that this week has been very good for Epic. I think it’s fantastic to see Apple promoting App Store titles in this way, and I can’t wait to see what else comes our way in the near future.
