Data from the popular educational app finder KinderTown has just been released, suggesting that many parents of preschoolers and kindergartners have bought Apple’s tiny tablet for their kids over the holidays. The data showed a dramatic increase of usage of the app on the iPad mini, which has led to the naming of the iPad mini as ‘the preferred kids’ tablet’. The app currently has over 200,000 users, so provides a big enough sample to draw the conclusion from.
As with any app, KinderTown experiences a lot of variation in usage from week to week, but during the holiday season, it experienced unusual amounts of activity, especially from the iPad mini. The graph below shows change in percentage of new usage used pre-Christmas to post-Christmas.
The graph shows that it wasn’t just the iPad mini that had increased usage, as the iPod touch (4th and 5th gen) and 4th gen iPad also had a big role in KinderTown’s statistics. However, the iPad mini has just pipped the other devices to be crowned, king of the kids’ tablets. The app’s developer did note that some device usage was from hand-me-downs to children, as parents upgraded their iPads and iPhones during the holidays.
