If you use Facebook’s dedicated Messenger application on your iOS device, you should know that the social networking giant has released an update with a few very interesting new features. Version 2.1 now lets users record and send voice memos in any conversation. The only restriction is that the memos have to be less than a minute but, honestly, who’s going to listen to a voice memo for more than a minute anyway? All you have to do is click the red record button in the application, press send, and your voice memo will appear as a playable file in the thread!

The other big new feature in the app is free VoIP calls. Currently it looks like this capability is limited to Canadian users, but if you happen to reside in Canada, you can now make free voice calls to your friends via the Facebook Messenger application. Interestingly, as Engadget points out, although Facebook and Skype are official partners, this latest VoIP venture is based off open source tech, not Skype. It is kind of a bummer that it’s Canada-only as of now, but I’m sure that won’t last for long.

If this sounds intriguing, you can head over to the App Store now to download the official Facebook Messenger application for free or update your current version. Once you’ve done so, come back here and let us know what you think of the new features!

Nice! Check out SAYTYA CALLER FOR FACEBOOK at http://www.saytya.com. It integrates VoIP PLUS real cellular calls (GSM/CDMA) and messaging and already works worldwide (VoIP) and on GSM in Europe. SAYTYA uses a patented calling method for this. If VoIP turns sour due to small bandwidth, SAYTYA switches to the cellular network. So you can call an iPhone in Germany or Turkey from the U.S. VoIP for free. Cellular support for the U.S. and other OS will follow in Q1 13. Anywhere – anytime is the key for mobile calls. Otherwise it is just another SKYPE that only works when online. http://www.saytya.com

Latest Facebook Messenger App update is really awesome. Voice messaging is exactly what we all waited for for so long. However there’s still one thing missing. Members of numerous Facebook Groups and Events don’t actually have a native tool for live voice conversations.

We’re trying to change this with GroupVox app that brings live voice messaging to existing Facebook Groups and Events. It feels natural to send voice notes to communities you’re a part of, right from any iOS device, Android or using built-in web-based player on Facebook. All voice messages are stored on Group’s Timeline and can be played anytime.

Check it out at Google Play and at AppStore. It’s free.
