Apple has announced today that it has seen 40 billion downloads since the App Store launched in 2008. Incredibly, almost half of those were in the last calendar year. 20 billion downloads in 2012! Astonishing success. The App Store also has over 500 million active accounts, with developers having now submitted and released over 775,000 apps.
“It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world.”
One of the biggest success stories of the past twelve months was Temple Run. The game – created by husband and wife team, Imangi Studios – was downloaded over 75 million times in 2012. The addictive freemium game has seen unrivalled success and has enabled the small developers to partner with Disney, creating the Brave version of the popular fun-running game.
