Imagination Technologies, the mobile graphics provider that Apple uses for its iOS line of devices, is reportedly buyings MIPS Technologies for the sum of $60 million. Expected to close in Q1 of 2013, it will supposedly include 82 of MIPS’s processor architecture related patents. First reported by AnandTech, this is of note because of two major companies that have ownership stakes in Imagination: Apple and Intel.
The PowerVR graphics have been in iPhones since the original, and have been in every iOS device since. The Apple line of custom silicons also include the technology, with the most recent A6X flavor having 4 PowerVR SGX 554MP4 GPU cores. I’m excited to see where this will go, as I’m sure it will eventually make its way to iOS devices. Maybe even Macs.
What do you think? Wondering where this is headed? Want to see it in iOS devices? Let us know in the comments.
