Messages beta users being notified of service end on Dec. 14

As of December 14th, 2012, te Messages beta for Mac OSX Lion will no longer be operational.

Jim, reader of AppleInsider, received this email from Apple.

In February of 2012, Apple launched the Messages app as a Beta for users of Mac OSX Lion. The Messages beta allowed Mac OSX Lion users to send and receive iMessages with iOS devices and other Mac OSX Lion computers.

Now that OSX Mountain Lion has been out for a few months, it seems that Apple wants to give a slight push to the users still on Lion to upgrade to Mountain Lion. Apple had already cut off all downloads of the Beta software in June (in preparation for the launch of Mountain Lion), but now it’s putting the final nail in the coffin for the Messages beta, and it has just sent out emails to notify those still using the Messages beta.

Are you still using the beta on Mac OSX Lion? Any particular reason why you haven’t upgraded to Mountain Lion yet? Let us know in the comments!
