Unlocked iPhones are not a new thing. They’ve been around almost as long as jailbreaking. While the concept has been around, it took a long time before major carriers started seeing it as profitable in the mainstream market. Now that many carriers have, though, it is much easier to unlock your iPhone and use it on any network you want, with nearly any plan you want. And if you own an iPhone in Canada then you have some good news coming your way too. It took a while, but Bell and Virgin Mobile have finally decided to start unlocking iPhones. Before you get too excited though, there are a couple hoops to jump through.
According to a story from MobileSyrup, The Canadian carriers have decided to give consumers the choice of having an unlocked iPhone, but the following specifications have to be met in order to get it done.
- Must own iPhone outright (all models supported, Bell and Virgin)
- Must not be on contract
- Must be a post-paid Virgin Mobile or Bell Mobility customer
- $75 onetime payment via Credit Card
While it is nice to see more carriers making this option available to customers, I’m not sure how I feel about the $75 fee attached. The other requirements are understandable and I’m sure there are those who wouldn’t mind paying the $75, but on the other hand, there are probably just as many people who won’t pay it.
