Review:

If you’re looking for an app that can help cut down on your minute-usage while connecting you with friends and family, you might appreciate imo.im.

The imo iOS app combines multiple instant messaging services, including Facebook Chat, Google Talk, Skype, MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, AIM, and so on. But not only can you communicate through text, imo.im also lets you make and receive free calls over Wi-Fi, 3G, or 4G without using your minutes.

It can be somewhat of a complicated process, adding all of your accounts to imo.im, but once you’ve synced everything, you can link them all together by clicking the “Link” button in the Account’s menu. This will enable you to remain logged in to all networks using just one sign-in.

You can choose between group chats or one-on-ones. To create a group chat, click the “+” sign in the upper right hand corner and select “Chat group.” Just type the names of your friends and away you go.

Adding to the convenience, imo.im allows you to send voice messages to your contacts instead of having to type. Voice IMs are playable on more networks, in addition to imo, and can be up to 30 seconds in length. To send a voice IM, click on the microphone button in an open chat window, press and hold the “Hold and speak” button, and then release to send it.

Voice calling is comparable to a regular phone call. The call was clear and of good quality. A huge selling point is that imo’s voice calling feature saves on minutes whether you are using a Wi-Fi, 3G or 4G connection; although, calls made over a Wi-Fi connection will prevent data usage. It’s important to note that contacts must have an imo account to use this feature.

Other features include the ability to send and receive photos and videos. Just click on the camera button in an open chat to choose the image or video you’d like to send. The file will be saved on imo’s server for 24 hours.

Although there are alternatives, you can’t beat imo’s simple interface and economic price tag (free). If you’re looking for ways to consolidate accounts on the go, or cut back on your minute usage, then take imo.im for a whirl.
