European App Store base price risen to 0.89€

Are you an avid app downloader? Do you live in Europe? If the answer to both of those questions was ‘yes’, then some bad news is heading your way, because Apple has upped the base price of its App Store apps from 0.79€ to 0.89€, to match current USD rates.

Not all European countries are being affected by this change, however, but if you’re wondering if you’ll be paying extra, check out the list below:

  • Italy
  • Spain
  • Netherlands
  • Portugal
  • Greece
  • Poland
  • Germany
  • France
  • Belgium
  • Austria
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • Luxembourg
  • Hungary
  • Russia

Apple may have also raised its commission levels from 30% to 40% in the affected countries, according to recent reports. MacStories explains:

“It needs to be mentioned, however, that Apple’s commission was already somewhat close to 40% before — around 35% and 36%. Now it is fixed at 40% and gets rounded to 41% in some cases, it seems. There are several factors to consider for this pricing change: Euro isn’t as strong as a year ago, so exchange rates have changed significantly in the past 12 months. Moreover, in countries like Italy and Netherlands, VAT has changed from 20% to 21% and 19% to 21%, respectively — something Apple has to account for in direct sales to customers.”

Happily however, the bad news ends there, as new currencies have also been added to the App Store by Apple, and the countries listed below will have App Store prices changing from USD to their native currencies:

  • Russia: Ruble
  • Turkey: Lira
  • India: Rupee
  • Indonesian: Rupiah
  • Israel: New Shekel
  • Saudi Arabia: Riyal
  • South Africa: Rand
  • UAE: Dirham
