Good news! AT&T will be “grandfathering” unlimited data for iPhone 5 buyers

Great news for existing AT&T customers. In the press release regarding the new iPhone 5′s details, AT&T’s official spiel included much poetic waxing about the latest super phone from Apple. Among which was a friendly paragraph directed at existing customers:

“We are thrilled to offer iPhone 5 on the nation’s largest 4G network. We’ve worked with Apple since the original in 2007 and this is hands-down their best phone yet,” said Ralph de la Vega, president & CEO, AT&T Mobility. “We offer customers the flexibility to keep the iPhone data plans they already have or choose any of our individual or new Mobile Share plans. We’re proud that more customers choose AT&T for iPhone than any other U.S. carrier and look forward to making iPhone 5 the newest addition to our lineup.”

This could well ensure that many of “Big Blue”‘s customers remain with them even as the LTE network status could entice customers across to the better equipped competitor, Verizon. Although the new iPhone does feature 4G LTE, it looks as though existing unlimited data subscribers will not pay a premium just for having a new 4G device.

Note: big blue as you quoted normally refers to IBM not AT&T. Not trying to split hairs but...

I'm going from AT&T unlimited to Verizon. They have LTE in my area and better all around coverage here in Harrsionburg VA.

@TodaysiPhone bad news. You won't have access to today's product at the announced prices until 5:8:2013 if u bought 4s on launch last year.

@yaynative I'm still considering a switch to Sprint. I'd look at Verizon but you can't talk & use data at the same time. #FAIL

@sansivera you can talk and surf on LTE on verizon, buts it’s not everywhere.

@yaynative that will make my man happy if he buys one. But not eligible for a year.

@sansivera I’m out of contract and waiting.

@yaynative I think I might be shortly. Need to check on it. Sick of bad reception w/ AT&T in New England. The west is fine but it sucks east

yaynative
yaynative @yaynative 12 Sep

@sansivera yeah, verizon is much better in new England. AT&T kills me in Stowe, VT.

@yaynative The whole Berkshires is a giant AT&T black hole. It's laughable. Partly because of NIMBY locals but also just bad coverage

sansivera
sansivera @sansivera 12 Sep

@yaynative Yes, but they "throttle" data if you "consume" too much. It's weird how they push us to mobile data & then make it painful...
